FASCIAS RESPONSE TO ACHES AND PAINS

What is fascia?

Fascia is the band of connective tissue that wraps around and supports the structure of your body. This helps provide form, stability and movement to the body to be able to provide flexibility and resist tension. The fascia we at FORM Chiropractic work with attaches and stabilises every muscle, tendons, ligament, bone and tissue in the body.

The most common fascia people have heard of is the plantar muscle on the base of the foot which helps to point and flex your ankle and if irritated or inflamed known as Plantar fasciitis.

Another common fascia irritation is Frozen Shoulder which can cause painful and limiting movement of the shoulder.

If you are interest in these other conditions we have more information in our blog section here!

How can fascia effect the body?

Inflammation & trauma can limit the movement and form provided by fascia, SO this can cause tightness in a certain area, which reduces and resists movement provided by the body and can present as pain.

Think about your daily activities - Are you doing the same things most days? Are these repetitive?
You may be causing spinal compression which puts excessive stress on the joints of your spine. This can also cause you to be in a more flexed position and almost hunched over. This can even cause tightness through your front fascia planes making it harder for you to breath through your diaphragm and therefore limit your breathing.

How can I keep my fascia happy & healthy?

Ways we like to keep fascia healthy is to:

  • Stretch muscles to maintain or improve flexibility.

  • Improving your posture, as slumping / poor posture can cause your fascia to tighten.

Our Chiropractic adjustments are likely to help with these two ways. Another way to keep fascia healthy is to keep moving, whether that is walking, yoga, pilates or any of your regular exercise or activity. A couple of other home tips to maintain healthy fascia is using a heat pack, 20 minutes on a sore spot and foam rolling as this can help with trigger points and the tightness in fascia.
