Hips and Bubs
Developmental Hip dysplasia is one of the most common musculoskeletal conditions of infancy. It is when there is an abnormal relationship between the leg and hip bones and can range in severity of instability of this joint. This can be felt or heard as a clunk with hip movement or if they are older, a limp when walking. Also can be queried if there is different leg length, uneven thigh folds or uneven buttock folds. This can be due to family history, sex of baby or breech presentation and is commonly detected before 3 months of age but can also be missed.
Your Edgewater Chiropractor Karli has a special interest in treating bubs and performing clinical hip examination, although hip dysplasia is usually picked up by pediatricians or child nurses. I will continue to reassess and check hips at 4 and 8 weeks, along with 4, 6, 8 and 10 months.
Treatment options for this include referral to gp for either and ultrasound or xray, depending on the age. This is then referred to a pediatrician. After a proper diagnosis and potential casting/bracing, it is important to do regular stretching and movement to maintain hip mobility, which helps with lubrication of the hip joint and may be likely to assist with pain levels.
A tip from our Chiropractors is to avoid tightly swaddling babies, as the legs should be free to move.
